Toss: what merchants should know

Toss is a Korean financial super-app whose Toss Pay wallet and Toss Payments gateway are widely used by local merchants. This page explains what it is, how customers pay, and how merchants connect.

What it is

Toss is a South Korean financial super-app from Viva Republica. It includes Toss Pay, a mobile wallet used by a large share of Koreans, and Toss Payments, a modern payment gateway that processes cards, bank transfers, virtual accounts, and other wallets. For merchants, Toss is both a popular customer wallet and a full gateway you can integrate directly.

Where it is mainly used

Toss is a South Korea method. Toss Pay is used by a large share of Koreans for everyday payments, and Toss Payments has become a default gateway for many Korean startups and e-commerce sites. If you sell to Korea, Toss covers both the wallet your customers hold and the rails to accept it.

How customers pay at checkout

With Toss Pay, the customer approves payment in the Toss app, often with biometrics. Through Toss Payments, your store can also accept Korean cards, bank transfers, virtual accounts, and other wallets (including KakaoPay and Naver Pay) in one integration. Korean online payments use a two-step identity check before authorisation.

How merchants get access

Merchants integrate with Toss Payments through its developer centre, using test keys before going live and a merchant contract for production. You can also turn on Toss Pay as a wallet within Toss Payments. A Korean business helps, but Toss Payments documents an international API guide for cross-border setups.

  • Test keys first, then a live merchant contract

PSP and aggregator route

If you want many Korean methods at once, use an aggregator such as PortOne that wraps Toss Payments, KCP, and others behind one SDK, or a global PSP that supports Toss Pay. This lets you switch methods without re-coding and handles settlement to your account.

Pricing and settlement

Toss Payments publishes indicative card fees (around 2.5% to 3.3% plus VAT for direct sign-up) and wallet fees that vary, but exact rates are contract-specific. Settlement is commonly next-business-day (D+1). Published pricing is for initial screening only; confirm the provider's official pricing page or a written quote before you go live.

Questions merchants ask

Is Toss a wallet or a payment gateway?

Both. Toss Pay is the customer wallet, and Toss Payments is the gateway that processes it plus cards, transfers, and other wallets.

Can a foreign merchant use Toss Payments?

Yes. Toss Payments provides an international API guide, though a Korean business and contract may still be needed for full local settlement.

How fast is settlement?

Toss Payments commonly settles on the next business day (D+1); your exact schedule is in your merchant contract.

What are the fees?

Indicative card fees are around 2.5% to 3.3% plus VAT and wallet fees vary. Published pricing is for initial screening only; confirm the provider's official pricing page or a written quote before you go live.

Do I need to build separate integrations for each Korean wallet?

Not if you use Toss Payments or an aggregator. Toss Payments can process KakaoPay and Naver Pay in one SDK; aggregators add KCP and more.
