PhonePe: what merchants should know

PhonePe is an Indian consumer wallet and payments app built on top of UPI, but it is not a bank and not a card network. It is best described as a wallet and a UPI third-party application provider (TPAP). For shoppers, PhonePe offers a prepaid wallet, UPI payments, bill payments, recharges, insurance, gold and other financial products inside one app. For merchants, PhonePe is primarily a distribution channel: customers pay you using UPI or the PhonePe Wallet through a PhonePe QR, a PhonePe payment link, or the PhonePe gateway on your checkout. It is a wallet-and-app layer, not an acquirer in the full bank sense; the underlying banking and settlement is handled through its partner banks and NPCI's UPI switch. PhonePe also offers co-branded credit cards and an Autopay mandate feature for recurring charges. PhonePe matters in India, where it is one of the largest UPI apps by transaction volu

What it is

How customers pay

PhonePe matters in India, where it is one of the largest UPI apps by transaction volume and has hundreds of millions of registered users. A huge share of Indian person-to-merchant UPI payments flow through PhonePe, so showing it as an option helps convert Indian customers, especially on mobile. It is also promoted for international UPI payment at select merchants in Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Mauritius. Outside India, PhonePe is not a general consumer wallet, so merchants meet it only as an Indian local payment method. Its merchant network spans both the PhonePe QR at small shops and the gateway on large e-commerce sites.

How merchants connect

  • Accept PhonePe QR at the point of sale through the PhonePe for Business app.
  • Share PhonePe Payment Links for remote or social-media selling.
  • Add PhonePe as a method through a payment gateway or aggregator that supports UPI/wallet.
  • Onboard via the PhonePe merchant platform for online collect and refunds.

Best-fit business models

PhonePe fits any business selling to Indian consumers, online or offline. Small merchants use PhonePe QR and the Business app; larger merchants add PhonePe as a method in their gateway or use PhonePe Payment Links for social selling. Because most of its volume is UPI, cost can be low under India's zero-MDR policy, but that depends on instrument and policy. PhonePe is especially effective for mobile-first checkout, where shoppers already have the app open. Public pricing is only a first filter. Actual pricing changes with country, industry, volume, settlement currency, integration method and contract terms. Confirm against the provider's official pricing page or a written quote before you go live.

Cross-border and local-entity limits

PhonePe is an Indian wallet and UPI app. Its cross-border footprint is limited to a few official UPI acceptance corridors and to Indian users travelling abroad. You cannot treat PhonePe as a worldwide wallet. Foreign merchants typically reach it only as part of an India acceptance stack, with Indian Rupee settlement and a local partner or entity. Confirm the current international UPI corridors before relying on inbound foreign payments, and remember that refunds to a PhonePe user still travel through Indian rails.

Provider questions to ask

  • How do I accept PhonePe Wallet versus PhonePe-UPI, and are the fees different?
  • What are the settlement timelines and the exact written fee schedule?
  • Can a non-Indian entity onboard, or do I need an Indian legal entity and bank account?
  • Do you support PhonePe Payment Links and refunds for cross-border or tourist flows?

Questions merchants ask

Is PhonePe enough as a standalone checkout option?

Usually no. Use PhonePe where it matches local buyer habits, then add complementary methods for cards, wallets, bank transfers, cash vouchers, or BNPL depending on the market and ticket size.

Can a foreign merchant connect to PhonePe directly?

Sometimes, but many merchants use a PSP, acquirer, aggregator, or local partner. Confirm entity, bank-account, currency, tax, industry, refund, and settlement requirements before implementation.

What should I verify before signing for PhonePe?

Ask whether the method is live for your entity and industry, which checkout flows are supported, how refunds and failed payments work, what fees apply, and which currency you receive.
