Gaming payment route checklist

How should a game studio, publisher, launcher, or top-up platform shortlist local payment routes for in-game purchases and stored-value top-ups?

Priority markets

Payment needs

  • Fast checkout for low-ticket items, battle passes, top-ups, downloadable content, and event-based purchases.
  • Payment methods that work for carded and under-carded users, including wallets, QR payments, instant bank transfer, convenience-store vouchers, and mobile money where relevant.
  • Strong order-state handling for pending, expired, failed, reversed, duplicate, and refunded payment events.
  • Fraud, account-takeover, refund-abuse, and reseller-risk review that is specific to virtual items and game economies.
  • Country-level reporting for campaign ROI, currency, FX, tax documentation, user support, and reconciliation.

Recommended route categories

  • Evaluate local PSP or aggregator routes for wallet, QR, instant bank transfer, cash voucher, and local card coverage in each launch market.
  • Keep gaming-specialist payment orchestration in the comparison set, but verify the local acquiring path and customer-facing methods rather than relying on brand coverage claims.
  • Use country pages to identify market-specific methods such as Pix, OXXO, SPEI, UPI, QRIS, GCash, Maya, PromptPay, MoMo, mada, and UAE card or wallet routes.
  • For prepaid and top-up flows, compare redirect, hosted checkout, payment link, and voucher expiry behavior before choosing a provider.
  • Ask every provider for written confirmation of virtual-goods review, refund workflow, fraud tooling, dispute exports, and account-country eligibility.

Provider selection questions

  • Does your underwriting team review game publishers, in-game items, loot boxes, stored value, top-ups, marketplace trading, or user-to-user transfers separately?
  • Which local methods support instant or near-real-time payment confirmation, and which methods can remain pending or expire later?
  • Can webhooks and reports carry game account ID, server/region, SKU, order ID, payment method, country, currency, FX, and refund status?
  • What fraud, velocity, refund-abuse, and duplicate-purchase controls are available before and after payment authorization?
  • Can you support launch spikes, promotional events, and regional payment-method A/B tests without changing the merchant account structure?

Risk and compliance notes

  • Virtual goods, stored value, loot boxes, secondary trading, and user-generated transactions may be reviewed differently from standard ecommerce.
  • Do not assume a provider's general digital-goods support includes the exact game mechanics, user geography, or monetization model.
  • Pending voucher and bank-transfer flows need clear in-game entitlement rules so unpaid or expired orders do not unlock value.
  • Confirm refund, chargeback, fraud, tax, consumer-protection, and minors-related policies in writing before launch.
