Marketplace payment route checklist

What should marketplace operators verify before choosing local payment routes for buyer checkout, seller onboarding, split settlement, and refunds?

Priority markets

Payment needs

  • Buyer checkout coverage across cards, wallets, instant bank transfers, QR payments, cash vouchers, and mobile money where relevant.
  • Seller onboarding, KYB/KYC, sub-merchant management, payout, refund, dispute, reserve, tax, and reconciliation workflows.
  • Clear distinction between payment acceptance, payment facilitation, wallet, escrow-like behavior, and seller payout services.
  • Reporting that connects buyer order, seller account, commission, refund, dispute, payout batch, settlement currency, and FX.
  • Provider review of marketplace role, regulated goods, platform liability, fund-flow model, seller geographies, and local licensing implications.

Recommended route categories

  • Evaluate PSPs or aggregators that can discuss marketplace fund flows, seller onboarding, and sub-merchant reporting for each target country.
  • Use local acquirer or bank routes where the marketplace needs deeper domestic acquiring discussion, while verifying whether a local entity is needed.
  • Compare international PSP marketplace products against local PSP routes for methods like Pix, SPEI, UPI, QRIS, GCash, M-Pesa, and local cards.
  • For seller payouts, keep payout capability separate from buyer checkout capability and verify each flow independently.
  • Avoid calling a route escrow, wallet, or payment-facilitation compliant unless the provider and legal review confirm the actual regulated role.

Provider selection questions

  • Can you support marketplace fund flows, sub-merchant onboarding, split payments, commissions, refunds, disputes, and seller payouts in this country?
  • Does our marketplace need a local entity, local bank account, local tax registration, or additional licensing before going live?
  • Which seller information, beneficial-owner checks, sanctions screening, product-category controls, and ongoing monitoring does the provider require?
  • Can reconciliation export buyer order ID, seller ID, commission, tax, refund, dispute, payout batch, settlement currency, FX, and fee components?
  • Which parts of the flow are payment acceptance, merchant-of-record, payment facilitation, stored value, payout, or escrow-like activity?

Risk and compliance notes

  • Marketplace fund flow is more sensitive than single-merchant checkout; do not infer sub-merchant, split-payment, or payout support from ordinary ecommerce acceptance.
  • Seller categories, regulated goods, prohibited items, cross-border payouts, and custody-like flows may require separate legal and provider review.
  • Refund and dispute liability should be mapped before launch because buyer, seller, platform, and provider responsibilities can differ by flow.
  • Do not publish unsupported claims about escrow, settlement timing, reserves, or payout eligibility.
