Nonprofit donations and fundraising payment route checklist

Which local payment routes should a nonprofit, campaign, membership association, religious organization, or fundraising platform verify before accepting donations in a new market?

Priority markets

Payment needs

  • Donation flows for one-time gifts, recurring gifts, pledges, event tickets, memberships, QR campaigns, invoices, and payment links.
  • Local cards, bank transfers, wallets, QR payments, mobile money, and cash collection through PSP, acquirer, gateway, bank, or wallet-operator routes.
  • Donor receipt, refund, chargeback, duplicate-donation, campaign attribution, restricted-fund, and reconciliation workflows.
  • Provider review for nonprofit status, fundraising permission, religious or political sensitivity, beneficiary countries, sanctions screening, and cross-border settlement.
  • Clear separation between donation collection, platform fees, fiscal sponsorship, peer-to-peer fundraising, and beneficiary payouts.

Recommended route categories

  • Shortlist PSPs, acquirers, and gateways that can review nonprofit or fundraising activity and support donation receipts or payment links.
  • For mobile-money-heavy markets, verify merchant collection through a licensed mobile money operator, PSP, or aggregator rather than treating mobile money as direct self-service access.
  • For recurring donations, compare card recurring, bank debit, UPI Autopay or equivalent local recurring routes only after provider confirmation.
  • For peer-to-peer fundraising or beneficiary payouts, evaluate marketplace or payout-provider requirements separately from donor checkout.
  • If there is no local nonprofit entity, ask whether a foreign nonprofit, fiscal sponsor, foundation, or platform entity can onboard and what proof of mission, registration, bank account, and beneficiary controls are required.

Provider selection questions

  • Do you support nonprofits, charitable donations, religious organizations, political-adjacent campaigns, peer-to-peer fundraising, and international beneficiary flows?
  • Can our current entity onboard, or do we need a local nonprofit registration, local company, local bank account, fiscal sponsor, or acquirer relationship?
  • Which donation methods are available through PSP, gateway, acquirer, wallet operator, bank, or mobile-money aggregator routes in each country?
  • How do donor receipts, recurring gifts, duplicate donations, refunds, chargebacks, campaign codes, restricted funds, platform fees, and payout records work?
  • What mission documents, board documents, beneficial-owner/signatory IDs, bank letters, tax documents, sanctions controls, and website disclosures are required?

Risk and compliance notes

  • Nonprofit and fundraising categories are often manually reviewed because of fraud, sanctions, beneficiary, political, religious, and misrepresentation risk.
  • Do not imply that public wallet, QR, or mobile-money consumer usage means a nonprofit can onboard directly; verify the merchant route through a provider.
  • Cross-border donations may require additional charity, tax, AML, receipt, and beneficiary documentation.
  • For Russia, Venezuela, and Myanmar, include only compliance and risk warnings, not provider paths.
